Relocation Data Center

Hi All:

I manage dozens of Office 365 tenants in Canada and many of them were set up prior to Canadian DC being available, so their data is resident in the US.  I am getting requests from my clients to ensure that their data is not stored in US data centers.  Is there a way to change the Data location.  There used to be a program that would do this and the data would be relocated to the Canadian Data centers in the background, but it ended in 2023.

Other than an external data migration (i.e. exporting all the O365 data, closing the tenant and migrating it somewhere else), is there a way to do this within Office 365?

Thanks

John

  • Unfortunately, the Data Residency Legacy Move Program, which allowed for seamless relocation of Office 365 data to Canadian data centers, ended in 2023. However, there are still a few options you can explore:

    1. Advanced Data Residency Add-On:
      • Microsoft now offers the Advanced Data Residency (ADR) add-on for eligible customers. This service provides data residency options for specific workloads in supported regions, including Canada.
      • You can check if your tenants are eligible for ADR and initiate the process through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
    2. Tenant Migration:
      • As you mentioned, an external migration is still an option. This involves exporting all data, closing the existing tenant, and setting up a new tenant in the desired region. While this is more complex, it ensures full control over data residency.
