Restoring deleted Class Notebook Pages and Sections

According to Microsoft guidance, deleted pages can be restored from the authors OneDrive: Recover deleted Class Notebook files from the OneDrive Recycle bin - Office Support (microsoft.com).

In our experience, this does not work, the deleted pages do not go into either the teacher or the students OneDrive and there is nothing in the OneNote/Notebook recycle bin. By default History is turned off on Class Notebooks and even when manually enabled, it does not track pages or sections deleted by students in the web client. Deleted content disappears into a blackhole.

This seems to be worsened by the fact that a Class Notebook is a consolidation of content from several places. Some content is in the underlying Teams SharePoint stored in Site Contents, other content is in Site Assets and the actual students work hidden in their OneDrive!? This makes impossible to restore from backup (unless anyone on here knows a way). We have Barracuda Cloud-Cloud backup for our MS365 but there is no way it can cope with restoring this.

Why on earth Microsoft see this as acceptable is beyond me? All the content needs to be in one place so that elements or the whole thing can be easily restored. There is a user voice around this. Please add to it if you have experienced this issue: Ability to EASILY restore student deleted pages and Sections in Class Notebook – Welcome to OneNote and Sticky Notes Suggestion Portal! Thanks

Hi,  Hope, there was a solution? more provsion for recovery?

I am experiencing the same challenge. Another similar query was raised in this article too: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msteams/forum/all/student-has-deleted-1-page-in-the-collaboration/4e5a9715-acdf-44d8-a964-c6202c5bb875

Class Notebook is really awsome, I love it :)))) but this issue really needs resolving/further advice 🙂

The deleted sections were not found in the Recycle bin for both myself and the student in One Drive  following these instructions: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/recover-deleted-class-notebook-files-from-the-onedrive-recycle-bin-b4b4aaa6-b03f-4808-8da2-51680ad53448

This is really worring if students deleted a section or a page!

The Class Notebook we are using is in Teams space, when we go to the corresponding SharePoint site, it shows which user (e.g. student) has deleted a section. Interestingly, there is a 'Restore button' (pictured below), but when we go through the restoration steps, no recovery happens ( e.g. the section won't be restored back to Class Notebook in Teams space).

We are promoting Class Notebook usage to staff in our organisation, however, this will sadly put off many academics of using the collaboration space with students. It will be too much hassle and time consuming 😞

Hope, someone could help on this!

    Kind Regards 🙂

MHB777 This is a case of Microsoft has released a product without proper data safety fetures such as backups. It seems if a student accidentally deletes a a page in Class Notebbok collaboration space, it's gone forever ... so much for collaboration! It's a real pity!

I hope this will be solved soon
I have a workaround for the back up, but it is impractical for busy eduactors!

I also think that the Microsoft have not made sufficient provision for recovery here.
