MDDGs: You'll know exactly to whom the message is being sent

I'm currently reading about modern dynamic distribution groups (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/recipients-in-exchange-online/manage-dynamic-distribution-groups/modern-dynamic-distribution-groups).

The documentation states

You'll know exactly to whom the message is being sent,

I was first positively surprised that users are now finally able to see who an email is being sent to, much alike to regular distribution groups.

So I created a MDDG a couple of days ago and now tried to expand it. In the Outlook desktop client, I see an error:

And in OWA simply nothing happens after confirming to expand the MDDG.

As an administrator I can confirm in the Exchange Admin Portal that this group has members.

Does this work for you?

    That does not feel right.

Why would they state "you'll know exactly to whom the message is being sent" in the docs about the modern DGGs? With the old DGG we also knew exactly to whom a message is being sent.

MDGG's have the UI option to expand them much alike regular DGs. This is new and was not the case with regular DGs. See below

And since the members are cached, the wording and the change to the UI would make sense, because the cached member information can be send to the client equal to regular DG's.

I can confirm, that OWA and New Outlook handles this better (without showing an Error Message) - but you still can't see the Members.

Only Outlook classic will show the Error when you try to expand.

      Kind Regards

  • Just to add to what Andres said, I believe the article you quoted refers to being able to see the members of a DDG via Get-DynamicDistributionGroupMember, not via any of the Outlook clients. Though they surely can handle things better in Outlook...

    Hi DanielNiccoli

A dynamic distribution group can not be expanded nor can you look at the Members in Outlook.

The Recipient Filter of the dynamic distribution group is kind of an LDAP Filter that sends the Mails to the Recipients that match to the Filter at the time a Mail will be sent to the dynamic distribution Group.

modern dynamic distribution groups only chaches these Informations - but are not visible for the Outlook Client as fas as i know.

    Kind Regards
    Andres
