Apr 27, 2022Remote assistance with Quick Assist is changing
Hi Insiders! Russell Mosier and Bianca Taylor, from the Experiences + Devices team are excited to share an upcoming change to their remote assistance app, Quick Assist.
Remote assistance with Quick Assist
Quick Assist is an app in Windows 10 and Windows 11 that enables you to receive or provide assistance with your PC over a remote connection. The current built-in Quick Assist app is reaching end of service.
To keep your remote assistance sessions secure, you will need to download the new Quick Assist from the Microsoft Store.
How it works
- Select Start > Microsoft Store.
- In the Microsoft Store window, type Quick Assist in the Search box.
- Click Quick Assist in the list, and then click the Get button.
Find out the rest here in the blog post!
Cheers,
Nathan

Wtf with this changing?
- Require admin privilege
- Require update to higher Windows OS 10 version
Are u f*** kidding me?! - VladK2022Copper Contributor
The pre-installed Quick Assist was one the best and most used tools on Windows 10 and 11.
New Quick Assist is practically useless ☹️ We stopped using it because installation from the app store requires admin privileges.
Microsoft, please, bring back the pre-installed version of Quick Assist...
Show the world that you are the best software company, that listens to its customers 😉
- hjsiaspaCopper ContributorThey won't bring it back. They just pretend that they listen to customers. I can list hundreds of irrational, illogical decisions made by them regarding Windows and server products. So, as others have mentioned, our company has moved away from Quick Assist too.
- Michael_WatermanCopper ContributorHey all,
Once the new quick assist is installed I've noticed a bug in the application. In the old version or even Remote Assistant you could set the policy "User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation" to bypass the UAC prompt during a remote session. This policy enables the secure desktop to be enabled for the interactive desktop but disables it temporarily when using Quick Assist in a remote session. In the new version of the app this seems to be broken. I've already filed a bug report a couple of days ago, but no response.
Can anyone verify my finding?- Robert_HurdBrass ContributorWhy is Microsoft doing this? Do we have an official response? This was a useful app that is now rendered useless that is not supporting WSUS updates. This is a joke! Get your priorities together Microsoft. Stop breaking good 'WINDOWS" experiences with your horrible store, no one wants it, that is why we are on WINDOWS!
- TS6141Copper ContributorThis is one of the worse implementations they have done, maybe only topped by Windows 8....Most corps do not even allow windows store, we don't and updating this to the store is the worst. It doesn't even remove the old version which makes it even more confusing for users.
Better yet I don't know why the remote function was not built into teams, seems like a easy enough solution to implement.

This is quite possibly the dumbest move MS has ever made. I'm not going to echo all of the very valid complaints that have already been made here. I just want to say that one of the suggestions of downloading the standalone package from the Store for Business/Education is a temporary solution at best, since the Store for Business/Education is also being discontinued early next year. We are a K-12 school system and I still haven't figured out how we are supposed to control what apps users can download from the store without the Store for Education. Ridiculous.
- CDeeeBrass ContributorThe only thing I can suggest is packaging them up into SCCM and distributing that way and make them 'Available' rather than 'Required'. Not ideal, because you also need the Store App to get the files in the first place.
- mbenayaspCopper ContributorAs mentioned by others before, if you manage to install new quick assist on Windows 10 LTSC 1809, when opening the application you receive a requires elevated permissions error.
Please, release a fix for Windows LTSC as soon as possible. We are close to summer holidays and a lot of remote assistance will be required.- Mike_SayersCopper ContributorAfter several days, the new quick assist on an LTSC 1809 machine started working from the "Already installed?" link in the OLD Quick Assist. This is the only one working so far. Additional installs don't show the link for at least a day, and I haven't been able to determine what gets it working.

I have Quick Assist working now at my client and deployed to all the devices. It has been a rocky road, full of workarounds, but I managed to pull through. I used the business store get the offline installer/licence. Synced it with Endpoint and used the offline installer to deploy it, this gives the possibility to deploy it on a device level instead of user level. Then, I've deployed Webview2 as an application object with Endpoint to workaround the annoying UAC screen. So, Quick Assist now works without nags or annoying stuff. To remove the old Quick Assist I wrote a Powershell script and that runs through Endpoint scripts. I sincerely think retiring the education/business store is a very bad decision.

Nathan_PfeiferThis is a terrible decision. Absolutely devestating for companies who for years relied on Quick Assit in their supply chain. Was it so difficult for MS to take into consideration that, due to the non-business related nature of its contents, many companies restrict access to Microsoft Store through GPOs? Our company cannot possibly allow its users to download apps from Store. I find it ironic that MS goes through all the trouble of implementing and excellent product like WSUS for businesses and leaves an important piece such as this tool out. I've already tried Store for Business as well (which will be retired next year) and guess what: it redirects me to the normal Windows Store that doesn't even work with corporate credentials!
- msmythCopper ContributorI understand that we need to keep technology current but the changes to Quick Assist are ludicrous. This should be a fully automatic install for all computers. Now we need another remote support app!
Scenario 1 - Work/.Enterprise > now can't use this app as users can't install due to admin permissions
Scenario 2 - Friends/family. Too complicated to get them into the Store, find the app and install. Before support was easy
Microsoft - this should never have been approved. - jimi_caiCopper ContributorI've read every comment and tried to find a solution but really need a fix ASAP.
Slowly as people update it in my org I'm having a feeling we are going to see more people get the "elevated permissions" required message when launching it. Please provide a fix. - JoJo-98Copper ContributorAre there any updates on getting it working again on an intune-registered device without admin credentials?
