Mobile app Sub folder notifications
We have pushed all our users to use Outlook mobile apps on iOS and Android, however many are complaining that they have created rules on the Outlook desktop client to put emails in certain sub folders (i.e. all emails from my manager go into a sub folder) and not getting notifications. As the email is moved to the folder before it gets to the client, the mobile apps do not display a notification.
As a work around I've had to set up some Flows so that if email received from a certain email address, it displays a notification. The user can then open Outlook and go to the relevant folder. Its not pretty.
This seems like a basic feature, its available in the iOS and Android stock mail apps which most used before we pushed them to Outlook.
Any plans on the mobile apps to have notifications for sub folders?

Andrew SparksI believe I stumbled upon the answer. On an android, inside your email app select the Menu Icon > Settings > (the associated email adress) > Folder sync settings > (Subfolder you wish to receive notifications from) and check the box for "Sync this folder."

I suspect perhaps they were referring the default mail client. Notifications worked fine using activesync, but the app in question is specifically outlook which many organizations moved to with Basic Authentication being phased out and spotty support for oAuth other apps.
- CravEcraCopper ContributorThis is unbelievable how this simple VERY simple issue has not been solved for years, could any one help us to make more noice on this?
- Diksha_K240Copper ContributorHi there!
1. Select any mail and after right click on that go to rules and then manage rules and alerts.
2. After that in "EMAIL RULES", select all the rules using shift+down arrow key. They go to change rule, and now select play a sound. After that a folder will open where you have to select the tune for the same. Select that and apply the rule.
3. Now you are all set to get notification for all the subfolders on your phone.
Just try once. Thank you.- sn_01Copper Contributor
the steps you have mentioned are applicable to desktop app configurations.
but the issue we are referring is about lack of sub folder notifications on mobile device outlook app.
how can any configuration made on a desktop outlook app change the notification behaviour of mobile device outlook app.- Diksha_K240Copper Contributor

Will this ever get addressed?
Here are numerous search results for this topic on reddit
Can't be that there isn't an option to turn on notification for new mails in sub-folders by now and that heading to other apps and mail-providers is the only solution?!

It's been 5 years!!!! Wow. Amazing. Still an issue. I mean they obviously don't care about this app. I'm looking for alternatives.

Andrew Sparks HOW IS THIS STILL NOT FIXED. WE ARE IN 2022

You are so right, this is absolutely ludicrous. It has been over four years since this issue was brought up. How little can Microsoft care about its customers? lets make it six years! Businesses all over, people all over have requested this SIMPLE feature be implemented, or at least make a feature you say exists ACTUALLY WORK.

And even if they DO implement this, it wont be right. I know for myself there is a reason I sort mail into subfolders. I do this because I get hundreds of emails daily. I have subscriptions to security bulletins, I get scheduled reports and other notifications, I get invoices and billing notifications from vendors that I do NOT want or need on my phone. I need to sync only SELECT subfolders to filter the information and cut down the noise coming in on my phone. I have 50 subfolders and I need about 12 of those to sync to my phone automatically.
I also think an "All mail folder" is key to show you all mail across all synced folders. Custom Search folders would be awesome like the "real" outlook has.
On android there are 3 Email clients that work perfectly, but they are not free. Nine Email (and the same company's new offering RE:Work) as well as Aquamail are all excellent applications. I previously used Touchdown and Moxier which have both been dead for years now. These are the ONLY email clients (on android) that I'm aware of. Does anyone have any others that sync select subfolders automatically? Any iPhone options? I don't know if the default Apple mail handles this.

Hi Hope you are doing well
Microsoft is working on a new feature for Outlook for iOS and Android that will help users organise their contacts. According to the Microsoft 365 Admin centre, the new Contact categories feature, which was revealed at Ignite 2020, will begin rolling out later this month.
Users of the desktop version of Outlook and the online app have long been able to organise their contacts in their Microsoft account into categories or folders. This makes managing their contact lists based on those categories much easier. Currently, if a user has contacts in a subfolder in Outlook on the web, Outlook for Windows or Mac, or Outlook for iOS or Android, those contacts do not sync.
The business is adding support for syncing contact subfolders in Outlook mobile, but with a twist, based on user input. Surprisingly, this folder information will be synced as categories rather than folders in the Outlook mobile client. Users who have created contact subfolders on their mobile devices will see those subfolders as new categories. In Outlook on the Web, Outlook for Windows or Mac, the category label will match the name of the subfolder.
Thanks

Still not fixed... WHY?
We shouldn't have to use a workaround to do something basic that such a widely used app made by a $2 Trillion company should already do. - VKlausCopper ContributorThe simplest workaround I can find is to set the rule to COPY to Folder instead of Move, very messy inbox and double storage essentially, however you would receive all notification as the original mail is still in inbox
- EcksfiftyoneCopper ContributorThese workarounds are just ridiculous for a basic feature. Even though this is called Outlook, it's clear this is not an enterprise application. It's not even a small business application. Microsoft isn't even trying. This app is probably fine for home users, but it shouldn't be called "Outlook". Remember, you get what you pay for.. and this is free.
If you want a fully functional, full featured email client with all of the features of desktop outlook.. look into AquaMail or Nine. I use both and both are fantastic. They are the only still supported, full featured apps I've found that sync select subfolders and are not proprietary and tied to a specific brand (apple, Samsung). Nine offers full mdm integration for true enterprises. The downside.. neither are free. - SJYunCopper Contributor4 years later and no one still has this feature!
The ONLY place where I get notifications emails that have rules to subfolders is on my Apple Watch. Not even the iPhone that it's synced with notifies me...
