Convert Regular Skype to Skype Business

How do I convert a regular account from skype home to skype business?

Our accounts were from MSN live (8 years back) and it was converted to Skype Home via Skype Migration (because Microsoft was discontinuing MSN) and then after a few years Skype introduced skype business.

How do I convert our Skype Home accounts to Skype Business? We don't want the contacts and chat history to disappear that is why we prefer those usernames under one domain to be converted and we have a lot of accounts to convert.

looking for some answers online and I can't really find any. I was referred to by Microsoft Community to ask here.

looking forward for your response thanks!

  • Hi,

Unfortunately there is no way to convert history or contact lists from Skype consumer to Skype for Business, so that is good that you don't need that.

You should probably go directly to Microsoft Teams instead of Skype for Business since Skype for Business Online will retire July 31st 2021.

When you activate your domain in Teams (or Skype for Business) it will create new accounts for your users that they can use to chat with. So there is no converting you have to do.

Currently there is no connection between Teams and Skype Consumer, but Microsoft announced (roadmap) that they will start roll out this feature in April. When that connection is released people will be able to chat with your users from Skype Consumer even if you are using Teams.

Thanks for the response. if that is the case what will skype home (not business) also cease operations on next year?

when you say it will create a new account. just to clarify, are thier skype contacts and chats will also be migrated to that new Teams account?

I hope they create some type of migration from skype to teams if they are to discontinue the service.

      Thanks!

      • B_D_618 No, Skype Consumer will not retire (what they announced).

No, there is no migrations path between Skype Consumer and Teams. You will have to recreate your contacts, but if the contacts in your Skype Consumer are other Skype Consumer contacts you have to wait until the federation between Skype consumer and Teams is ready (should be ready in May 2020).
