CAL license management

What is the procedure to install a CAL (not RDS CAL, just CAL) on a Windows Server 2022 server either in an AD domain and in a workgroup?

How can a customer check the use of CALs to be sure not exceding the number of CALs he purchased?

  • Hi, Standard Windows Server CALs (Client Access Licenses) do not require a technical installation on the server. They are essentially legal rights that allow a user or device to access the server. This applies whether the server is part of an Active Directory domain or operating in a workgroup environment.

There is no built-in mechanism on Windows Server to automatically monitor or enforce the number of CALs in use. It is the customer's responsibility to track the number of users or devices accessing the server and ensure that this number does not exceed the number of CALs purchased. For Remote Desktop Services (RDS) CALs, there is the Remote Desktop Licensing Manager, but for standard CALs, manual tracking is necessary.
