Cloud attach vs. cloud only: the debate
Event Ended
Monday, Oct 24, 2022, 09:00 AM PDTEvent details
Are you planning a new Microsoft Intune deployment? Are you wondering if you need Configuration Manager? Join Danny and Steve for a special edition of Unpacking Endpoint Management as they breakdown key management workloads of Windows devices (compliance policies, Windows Update policies, resource access policies, Endpoint Protection, device configuration, Office Click-to-Run apps, and client apps) to help you determine if cloud attach or cloud only is right for your new Intune deployment.
This session is part of the Microsoft Technical Takeoff: Windows + Intune. Add it to your calendar, RSVP for event reminders, and post your questions and comments below! This session will also be recorded and available on demand shortly after conclusion of the live event. |

- LOVE IT! The simple answer: F-Disk and start over *LOL* 🙂
- Rob de RoosIron ContributorSysprep /oobe
- thomaskieferCopper ContributorWhat if we do not have Autopilot/When will Autopilot come out for Gov tenants?
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
For Intune tenants in GCCH, we are actively investigating adding Autopilot support. No guarantees, or commitments, but there should be some announcements in Q1 (assuming everything goes well).
- Rob de RoosIron ContributorGPO's are realy fast in applying. Intune policies/profiles are a lot slower. If we compare to other, agent driven, MDM solytions... Intune is on the slow side. Is there anything to share on that?
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
Please open a support case to help dig into this as this is not the expectation.- Rob de RoosIron ContributorWell, our company manages a lot of tenants for our customers. But the most heard frustration is that policies can take a "long time" to apply. Whenever you force a sync, the policies are applied quicker. I believe it still could be faster. Other MDM solutions use agents and when a new policy is configured a trigger is sent out to all those agents. This makes the change to policies almost instant for all online clients. Also reporting on if policies are applied is always behind. Especially when you are testing and need to see the results before publishing policies to production, reporting should be almost instant in my opinion.
- David_SwensonSteel ContributorAre there plans in the works to invest in Provisioning Packages (giving them a more end-user friendly UI and setup process?). We have several use cases for End-users enrolling their own devices.
- SteveThomas
Microsoft
Help me understand the question better - Do you want users to be able to self-create their own PPKGs?
- wollewoldemarBrass ContributorDo have some one interest to share some experience in a community?
- Rob de RoosIron ContributorIsn't that why we have this techcommunity.microsoft.com where you posted this? 😉
- wollewoldemarBrass ContributorTrue one but it is interesting to see the we all are fighting with similar problems. Like deploying CAD software over Intune 🙂
- JavoMejiaCopper ContributorTalking about workload migration to cloud and apps, what about complex sites that are supported using distribution points. Would have any option to config an app on Intune and deploy it to on-premises distribution point like service?
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
My standard question here is what do you need that standard delivery optimization using peer to peer does not provide? This provides the same (or similar) results as a DP without having a dedicated, on-prem footprint. - SteveThomas
Microsoft
In many cases, the reasons behind leveraging a complex distribution environment revolved around bandwidth and bandwidth management. With the shift to a cloud-only infrastructure, we realized there would be use cases like the one you mentioned which is why there is continuous development and innovation in this area. For example, I would encourage you to look at Microsoft Connected Cache when it comes generally available. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/do/waas-microsoft-connected-cache
- ROM_1Brass ContributorWhen Will Intune Uninstall actions will be as "on user hands" as with cfgmgr? users can install apps thru company portal, but can't uninstall them with intune... it's possibible thru Software center.
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
Win32 App Uninstall in the Company portal is coming *soon*.- ROM_1Brass ContributorCan't wait for it. 😉
- jaymac1440Occasional ReaderHow would you recommend moving machines from one intune environment to another?
- Rob de RoosIron ContributorMove Autopilot and reset as they say is the only way. There is no migration tool available that can do it.
- ZebulonSmithIron Contributor
There's no question that Co-management gives us the best feature set for managing devices. What is the future direction for Configuration Manager? Will it still be developed with new features, or will the functionality that it provides beyond what Intune gives us on its own be moved into the cloud?
Some examples of features that Intune can't provide without Co-Management are collections based on inventory data, bare metal OSD, CMPivot, and more advanced Application delivery.
- MervWhiteBrass ContributorAgreed. And some features that ECM is deprecating is MS Store for Business and Education, requiring Co-management. What more is going to be deprecated from ECM?
- SteveThomas
Microsoft
As I've mentioned on the show before, bookmark this page: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/configmgr/core/plan-design/changes/whats-new-incremental-versions You can see that there continues to be innovations and feature enhancement releases three times a year.
- CarywellsCopper ContributorWhat is your solution for app deployment when the third party doesnt support Intune but does SCCM such as Autodesk
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
Ultimately, not sure what there is here to support. Both Intune and ConfigMgr take a set of source files that you provide, deliver them to the targeted endpoints, and run a command-line that you supply against those source files. What those source files are for and what the command line does is up to the vendor that supplied or created them and not anything ConfigMgr or Intune has any true visibility or control over. There are occasional nuances that require you to know the user context and adjust accordingly, but there isn't anything specifically different between the the tools in this regard. - Paul_WoodwardIron ContributorIn my experience, if you can install with SCCM you can install with Intune (as Win32 App). No difference as far as the end result, so vendor doesn't care. Vendor may not offer you support in how to do it, granted, but where there is a will...
