This month, we’re excited to announce the rollout of several new AI capabilities integrating Project Manager agent with your task management processes, as well as feature updates that address some of your most requested features. Thank you for continuing to share your thoughts as we continue to improve and build on the Planner experience!

New AI capabilities with Project Manager agent

Project Manager agent now launching in Europe

We’re excited to announce that Project Manager agent is now rolling out to European-based customers with eligible licenses in public preview, following our initial release to Planner users in North America and Asia-Pacific.

The Project Manager agent is an AI-powered virtual assistant designed to enhance planning experiences by streamlining workflows and managing tasks on your behalf. Read more about Project Manager agent in our blog post, “Unleashing the power of agents in Microsoft Planner.”

Generate tasks from a PDF

We've heard a strong desire from customers to automate the creation and execution of tasks using attachments. Now, you can upload PDF files to generate and complete tasks with Project Manager agent.

Explore more collaborative experiences with Project Manager agent

With a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, you can generate and execute tasks in plans alongside Project Manager agent. We are now rolling out functionality to enable users with a Microsoft 365 license to view and comment on content generated by Project Manager agent, so that you can better collaborate on these plans with others in your organization.

Automatically create dependencies when generating tasks

Tasks generated with Project Manager agent will automatically include task dependencies to recommend the order in which the tasks should be executed. To visualize these task dependencies, select the Timeline view of your plan. With this update, Project Manager agent can generate better content when executing tasks, as these dependencies help it understand the relationship and context between tasks in your plan.

Create plans generated by Project Manager agent in a Microsoft Teams channel

With the new update to the Planner experience in standard Teams channels, you can now quickly kickstart a plan in a Teams tab with the assistance of Project Manager agent.

The latest enhancements to Planner

Differentiate your plans with custom backgrounds

With custom backgrounds, you can customize the theme of your basic plans to more easily distinguish between your projects. To add a background, open the Plan details of any basic plan by either selecting the plan name or the dropdown menu next to it in the plan header. From there, a side pane will open with suggested backgrounds tailored to your plan. This feature is still rolling out, so if you don’t see it yet we encourage you to come back and try again next week.

This was a popular feature request when we launched the new Planner, and we’re excited for you to check it out! Note that if you previously had a plan with a custom background, that background should reappear in your plan with no action necessary.

A screenshot of Planner shows the Grid view of a plan. The Plan details pane is open to the right with different background options.

Organize your tasks with Board view, now in My Day and My Tasks

With Board view now available in My Day and My Tasks, you can manage and prioritize your tasks in a more visual way. Read more about Board view in My Tasks and My Day and how you can use it to better organize your top priority tasks and help manage your workload.

Join plans in public groups

Plans created in public groups will now include a Join button, so you can easily add yourself to the plan.

Recover recently deleted tasks

You can now undo the deletion of a task by either selecting CTRL + Z or selecting Undo in the toast that appears at the bottom left of your screen.

Thank you! Great improvements happening. Question, since upgrading to premium, I've lost the ability to sort columns in grid view. Is there a fix int he works? Thanks!

Sorry to hear that jmaysi ! You should have that capability as part of premium - could you clarify what type of sorting you're trying to do? We can investigate if there's a bug on our side or if it's unsupported functionality. Thank you!

Hi Nancy. Thanks. And yes, I could clarify. I'm finding the same issue in Planner Teams and Web app. Every since I upgraded this Plan to Premium (Planner Plan 1), when in grid view , I am unable to sort my tasks by columns. When I click on a column header, I no longer have the option to sort, but only to hide column. See screenshot. Let me know if this helps or if you need more info. Thank you for your help! I would love to resolve this.

Hi Nancy! It's great to see how the planner has evolved. Any thoughts on cost management in P4W?

Thanks for the question RaulSoares! Could you tell me about what you're looking for with cost management in premium plans? e.g. any specific scenarios where you'd find this useful, and what workarounds do you use currently?

Nancy, Well, I'm one of the biggest advocates of P4W because I see it as a natural evolution in project management, and it has indeed become much better to use. However, I really miss the ability to add hourly rates for resources or the total budget amount and have it displayed in the planner's main view.

At the moment, I'm using Microsoft Excel to track project costs. But if we could somehow manage project costs directly in P4W, similar to how it works in the desktop version or something close to that it would be amazing.

One example would be: if a resource costs $50 per hour, P4W could automatically calculate the total cost based on the allocated hours in the schedule, and this view could be available as an option, just like the grid view, timeline view, etc.

Having this feature available would be really valuable for us.

Hi Nancy, please can you bring back alphabetical ordering of the plans when pinned as well as the ability to sort plans by name on the My Plans page. It would help to quickly find plans and to be aligned with others in group meetings as we open and discuss the various project plans one by one. Thank you

Definitely keen to try the AI features for my next project.

For the option to join public plans, I'm assuming this also adds the user to the M365 Group and associated services (e.g. Teams, SharePoint etc). Is this highlighted in the process for end users?

Hi HelloBenTeoh! Yes, your assumption is correct. Let me get back to you on whether that's highlighted for end users - thanks for the question!

Updating with more info - sounds like we highlight for end users that they'll be leaving the M365 group / associated services when they leave a plan. The join flow currently doesn't include these details.

  • Nice features Nancy!  Backgrounds and Board views are big ones, and some cool editions to the agent too.  Should Ctrl-z (cmd-z?) work on the Mac in Teams yet?  Only undo working for me.  When it does work is it only while the toast is visible?

    Brian.

Appreciate your feedback BrianSmithPhotos! Thanks for trying out the undo functionality - sharing your issue with the team and will loop back with what I hear back.
