Internet speed

So i have 250/100 internet but for some reason i get 250mb download but my upload does not go over 10mbs. But when on wireless it gives 250/100

anyone have any ideas or fixes to run?

yes i have tried with different cables and devices where the internet is fine

  • The following comes thanks to my friends Copilot and ChatGPT:

The situation described suggests there might be an issue with the wired connection configuration or hardware. Here are some potential causes and fixes to explore:

    Possible Causes

    1. Network Interface Card (NIC) or Port Configuration:
      • The Ethernet port on the device may be set to a lower speed or duplex mode (e.g., half-duplex instead of full-duplex).
      • A mismatch in speed/duplex settings between the router and the NIC can throttle upload performance.
    2. Faulty Ethernet Cable or Port:
      • Despite trying different cables, the Ethernet port on your router or your device might be malfunctioning. Try using a different port on the router or a different device to see if the issue persists.
    3. Router or Modem Configuration:
      • The router's wired connection settings might impose upload bandwidth limits or prioritize wireless traffic differently.
    4. Outdated Drivers or Router Firmware:
      1. Outdated firmware can cause various issues. Make sure your router's firmware is up to date.
    5. QoS (Quality of Service) Settings:
      • If Quality of Service is enabled on the router, it might be prioritizing upload bandwidth for wireless devices over wired connections. Check your router's Quality of Service (QoS) settings to ensure that wired connections aren't being deprioritized.
    6. ISP Throttling or Misconfiguration (less likely):
      • Some ISPs may misconfigure upload speeds for specific connection types (wired vs. wireless). Less likely, but still possible.
    7. Firewall or Security Software:
      • Software-based firewalls or antivirus programs might throttle upload bandwidth on wired connections due to scanning.

    Troubleshooting Steps

    1. Check NIC Speed Settings:
      • On Windows: Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters > [Your Adapter] > Properties > Advanced Tab > Speed & Duplex. Ensure it’s set to "Auto-Negotiation" or the maximum supported speed (1 Gbps full-duplex, if available).
      • On macOS/Linux: Check the network settings for similar configurations.
    2. Test with a Different Port on the Router:
      • Try connecting to a different Ethernet port on the router or switch to rule out a faulty port.
    3. Disable QoS or Bandwidth Management:
      • Log in to the router’s admin panel and disable QoS, bandwidth limits, or prioritization settings temporarily.
    4. Update Drivers and Firmware:
      • Update the Ethernet adapter's drivers on the device and the router/modem firmware.
    5. Run Speed Tests on Both Wired and Wireless:
      • Compare the upload speeds for both wired and wireless. Look for consistency issues that might highlight a hardware or configuration problem.
    6. Test with a Different Device:
      • Plug another device directly into the same Ethernet cable to determine if the issue is device-specific.
    7. Contact ISP:
      • If all else fails, contact the ISP to ensure there are no misconfigurations or issues with the wired connection.
