Edge Sync w/ MS 365 Basic and Business Standard
Hi,
I noticed that some of my customers with MS 365 Basic and Business Standard plans can sync their MS Edge information, while others can't. Based in this article, sync only works with plans that include Azure AD Premium P1 and P2, Microsoft 365 Business Premium, and EDU.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-enterprise-sync
Could it be that MS is starting to expand to smaller plans? Is there an article with details about this?
Thanks...
- RVCBrass ContributorI have the same issue, have a Business Premium, but on all systems, no matter wat OS it is installed on, sync is disabled.
Very frustrating as there seems no option to pull to enable this sync.
Microsoft is very eager to get you money, but support is not their best side- fathermaurerCopper Contributor
I recently spent several weeks going back-and-forth with Microsoft 365 support - they insisted that I needed to purchase an AIP subscription to make Microsoft Edge sync work. Only this thread convinced me that this was not true.
After reading through the various pieces of advice, I have come up with the following steps that have successfully enabled Microsoft Edge sync on two different tenants - both with only Microsoft 365 Business Standard licenses. I am confident that this will work for you too, but I would be grateful for any feedback (especially if it works for you!)
Before following these steps, it is recommended that the user create a backup of their favorites
Azure Information Protection (AIP) setup (by way of Rights Management Adhoc licensing)
- Download and install Microsoft Azure Information Protection Viewer
- Launch Azure Information Protection Viewer & click “Need an account? Sign Up”
- In the browser window that opens, log in with a Global Administrator account from the desired Microsoft 365 tenant
- Enter the e-mail account of the global administrator account and click ‘sign up’
- You’ll be redirected to “You have an account with us” – continue signing in with the global administrator user account
- Click ‘Start’ when prompted
- You’ll know it has finished when you reach the page “Azure Information Protection helps protect your organization's sensitive data”
- Confirm that Rights Management Adhoc licensing has been assigned to your tenant (there should be 10,000 licenses, one assigned to the global administrator user account)
- Ensure that the desired users are assigned the Rights Management Adhoc license
- It may take some time for these assignments to propagate – it took about 15 minutes in my case
Microsoft Edge sync setup
(The follow steps will be needed for each user setting up Microsoft Edge sync)
- Log out of your browser profile on ALL devices
- Log back into one browser profile
- Sync should now work – if it does not, read below
- It may be necessary to perform a sync reset – to do so return to step one and continue to the steps below
- Immediately after freshly logging into a browser profile, navigate to edge://settings/profiles/sync
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Still having sync problems? Try another option”
- Click “Reset sync”
- Wait for the process to complete
- Return to step 1 – synchronization should work normally
- (FYI: The status of synchronization can be monitored at edge://sync-internals/)
- Sync should now work – if it does not, read below
This solution should be credited to the following users - who also have my sincerest thanks! - whose posts informed this guide:

Works as described for Office 365 E3 subscription.
- madzackCopper ContributorI'd like to share that I opened a ticket with support.office.com stating "Microsoft Edge Sync fails with my Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription." I did not receive a response of how it was resolved but it was resolved within a couple hours. They were very responsive and followed up to make sure the problem was resolved. I have to admit I was surprised and impressed.

Hi All,
On 2/1 I received a response from my open ticket with the issue being resolved.
You'll need to perform the profile sync reset and then it should work.
I was able to successfully test this using the build: Edge Version 98.0.1108.43 (Official build) (64-bit)
You can also verify this using: edge://sync-internals/
I logged into a second machine, added back the profile, and sync worked - all extensions loaded, history, etc.
Enjoy!

mezzoly Thanks for the update!
I have confirmed that with Edge Version 98.0.1108.43 it works now!
Log out of your Edge profiles on your secondary devices before beginning.
Also, backup any website credentials if needed.I'm using Business Basic, and I deleted my Edge profile on my primary device, logged back in and reset profile sync.
I then used Edge on an iPad (my secondary device) and logged into my business account.
Once I started populating favorites and saved passwords on the primary device, it also showed up on the secondary device!
The way it is supposed to work from day one:
Thanks all and good luck!!
- Lowrider614Copper ContributorKelly_Y I provided feedback including the Tenant ID and the tag you asked for.
Same issue here, edge not syncing - cbteohCopper ContributorAny update on the fix or an ETA?
I have also submitted feedback with TechCommunitySync, TennantID and email. - MichaelArroyoKMCopper Contributor
After either activating Microsoft Endpoint Manager or instituting the Edge GPO files, my environment began doing the same thing. All users suddenly lost sync capabilities.
After a many days of research I finally installed Microsoft Azure Information Protection Viewer on my admin desktop. Installing and logging in resolved sync on my machine with my account. Soon after I found that Microsoft had provisioned 10,000 Rights Management Adhoc license to our accounts, 1 of those was assigned to my account.
I pushed that license to all of my users and Sync returned for all of them.
Hope that helps!- ABNOTECHOnlineCopper Contributor
I have tried your suggestion and my M365 now has the 10,000 Rights Management Adhoc license and one is assigned to my account but no dice unfortunately.
- MichaelArroyoKMCopper ContributorMake sure you sign out of Edge and sign back in, enabling sync when you sign in.
- ABNOTECHOnlineCopper ContributorI also am an O365 Business Basic customer and cannot get Edge sync working. Have already submitted feedback request.
- SoerenEilenbergerCopper ContributorI have the same issue and also send feedback with the mentioned description.
- SoerenEilenbergerCopper Contributor
unfortunately, it stopped working again. On another maschine, I didn't get it to work as well.
I also have this now with another tennant as well

I deleted the Edge profile yesterday and set it up again. Now it works! Thanks!
- FranciscoriCopper ContributorSame here, also with Business basic

Franciscori @aviynw rev23dev tcgcomputers Luke_R Hi Everyone! I have confirmed with the team that Sync should work with Business Basic and Business Standard.
For the team to investigate further, would you all be able to submit diagnostic data through our in-browser feedback tool? It's under "..." menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback. Please select "Send diagnostic data"
Also, for the team to be about to find it quickly, can you include the string "TechCommunitySync" in the description and comment below once you've submitted it? Thank you!

Hi Daniel Velez - I just spoke with the Sync Team. There have been no changes to the Sync Prerequisites.
Do you have a specific case where M365 Business Standard or Business Basic is able to Sync and would like us to investigate?

- PhilTDevCopper ContributorI've submitted a feedback report with my tenant ID and "TechCommunitySync" in the description.
