Is there a way to create custom Chat sections other than Pinned and Recent?
Under Chat you can pin a particular chat and it will show under a "Pinned" section that can be collapsed / expanded, besides the "Recent" section that is always there. As you start pinning more conversations the Pinned section can get more cluttered.
Is there a way to create custom sections? For example to group people from TeamA so I can find their contacts easily instead of having to search for them.
Note that I don't want to send a message to multiple people at once, the idea is to be able to quickly find the contacts that are available from a given group.
This feature is available on Slack (custom sections) and it was really useful to me, before I moved to my current employer which uses Teams instead.
To be clear, I think this is tied to the Public Preview option. I enabled it, a few minutes later I got the popup and could make groups of chats. I tried disabling the option and restarted Teams, the groups went away. Re-enabled, groups are back.
The option is in the About Teams section (bottom left of Settings screen) at the bottom.

Bizarrely, I had this feature for a few weeks and then it disappeared today. And I'm on a later version that the one mentioned below.

This works for me. In my current Teams I can right click on the chat and I have a 'move to' option, which allows me to create a new section, then I name that section as needed, placing it to the top of my chat lists. I am running Teams 25007.606.3361.4724, client version 49/25010620407

Hi, I do not see a "Move To" option when I right-click on chats. Is this a recent addition? Could my environment not have been updated?
Thanks,

It did not show up for me until I checked the Early Access 'Public Preview' box in Settings, shown below. Even then it took a while, eventually a box popped up to show off the feature. My Teams version does not match the one above but the client version does.

Holy cow, this is actually true for me too. I saw this comment, tried it, and no luck. I tried enabling the 'Public Preview' version of Teams in the settings, no change. Now I got a popup that I can make sections and move my chats around (basically the same as I did when we used WebEx).

Just googled to see if teams had this and it seems like it doesn't and everyone is asking for it. I have different groups of people that I communicate with. I have a member on my team and any messages regarding a task that needs to be sent to someone it's a group message with me included so that we both have visual but when I want to go back to the chat I have to "create" and type both their names in to find that chat or I pin it and my pinned list is almost a long as my recent list. PLEASE give us the ability to add categories to recent pinned conversations!

This is currently in Public Preview, and expected to be released to the public in late March, 2025.

It is working for me in Public preview. thanks it is really useful

I too support multiple people in multiple teams from multiple locations. being able to sort each chat/group would be so much more helpful than trying to scroll through a list of 100+ communications.

You can use the Categories under People Tab. In this we can group the people based on Category
- jefferyshallCopper Contributor
That is only in the People app. They are asking about in the Chat section in Microsoft Teams.

Cool workaround but unpractical
- bryrodCopper ContributorI also need this feature. We've moved away from Slack. Be more like Slack, Teams. I need to be able to group chats and individuals across multiple teams. Having only Pinned and Recent sections is incredibly limiting.

- pegasusgiraffeCopper ContributorTeams definitely needs to do this, it is extremely absurd and inefficient that they do not.
Slack is a perfect example of this - I can make subcategories on my sidebar and group them however I want.
I deal with literally 2-3 dozen chats happening on a daily basis, and to have to lump them all together under "Pinned" is a headache-inducing pain. - Gadget1969Copper Contributor
I would also love to have this feature, and agree it seems like it would be inherent ...

This feature appeared, now disappeared agin

I too would greatly appreciate this feature.
My days it would make work life so much better for all the reasons already mentioned - Numerous regular meeting threads, Numerous Teams / Departments you're part of, Favourite colleagues etc etc.
Please Listen Microsoft 🙏🙏🙏

This will be highly needed feature where grouping of chats based on the topics. This will really improve the productivity and efficiency of the tool.

Though not your ask, recent Teams killed one of my most cherished features - Contacts. Working with 70+ groups over time, created numbers of contact subfolders to put people's contact placeholders. When I couldn't remember who but could remember what, opened the "what" folder, found name, continued on.
Teams eliminated even that function in recent months. So now I cannot make meaningful functional contact lists, I can only pin 15 at a time under chat.
Back to your ask - I wonder if MS will ever make user-selectable number of pinned chats? IMO, they don't really understand the law of unintended consequences on this one.
- ChrysanneWestinCopper ContributorAdding myself to the desperately wanting this feature group. I should not have to make a list outside of teams to find, for example, an IT or HR contact that I can't recall the name of. I work for the VA and there are too many contacts to remember. Much more than the 15 we can PIN.
PS- I also do not have the contacts button in teams.- Jonatas4ndradeBrass Contributor
ChrysanneWestin They removed the feature with the New Teams version. Just a little after I discovered it, they came and removed the feature 8(
