Onedrive and Prevent access to drives policy

I am working with clients that have enabled a group policy "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" as part of their security hardening process. 

This prevents them from accessing their OneDrive folder. 

The following article describes a workaround, but it results in a less secure setup.

Has anyone solved this issue in the 4 years since this article?
