Event Ended
Thursday, Jan 25, 2024, 09:00 AM PSTEvent details
Our engineering team is hard at work on features for the next Windows Server!
In this AMA, you’ll get a chance to ask any questions and give feedback to our program managers about what we’re currently calling “Windows Server v.Next,”. If you missed Ignite, you can check out this video to learn more. We’ll have experts on hand to answer questions on Hotpatching, Active Directory, File Server, Storage, Hyper-V, Security, and more.
Ned Pyle, Principal Program manager, and Jeff Woolsey, Principal PM Manager will be among the chat leaders from the Microsoft side. We're looking forward to seeing you there!
How to Participate:
1. Post your questions early: Start preparing your questions and get them in early by commenting below this event post.
2. Join us on January 25th: Be sure to attend the live session from 9:00 AM Pacific Standard Time onwards to have your questions answered.
This AMA is text only – meaning there will not be any video nor audio.
An AMA is a live online event similar to an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with members of Microsoft trainers and the product engineering team who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.

Will Storage Reserve be enabled by default in Server v.Next? It's been in Windows 10 and 11 for years now, but I don't see it enabled in my server 2022 builds. Thanks!- NedPyle

Hi. I see it on and enabled by default on my Windows Server vNext RS_PRERELEASE machine here right now:

Welcome to our Windows Server v.Next Ask Microsoft Anything (AMA)! This live hour gives you the opportunity to ask questions directly to the Microsoft team. Please post any questions in a separate, new comment thread on this event. Feel free to introduce yourself on this thread below! - exchange12rocksIron ContributorWhat are your plans for the AD CS role?
- NedPyle
Microsoft
Hi. There are no significant announcements for Windows Server vNext AD Certificate Services role. Right now the headline is Intune PKI https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-intune-blog/microsoft-cloud-pki-launches-as-a-new-addition-to-the-microsoft/ba-p/3982830- What could be helpful is a WAC extension Ned. AD CS MMC isn't playing nice when managing one that has hundreds of certs. (Performance / UX). Sometimes MMC may crash or cause unexpected behaviour like bulk selection and cease operation of certs. Generally housekeeping could be improved in a WAC extension. The existing one for local certs is really promising.
- exchange12rocksIron ContributorWhen will you release this new version of WS? Will it be called 2025?
- Elden_Christensen
Microsoft
The next release of Windows Server will be in H2 of this calendar year. Check out the Windows Server Insider builds (link below), there will be a new one tomorrow which will have some exciting new stuff. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewserver Thanks! Elden

Thanks for this AMA! Will the Hotpatch Option over Azure Arc for on-premise Systems (not Azure Stack HCI Hosted) require the use of Azure Update Manager or can Hotpatches also be deployed by WSUS or ConfigMgr? Can you say something to pricing? Thanks!
- NedPyle
Microsoft
Hi Michael. It will not require AUM, but that will be a supported option. It will support AUM, WU, WSUS, etc. (although WSUS and ConfigMgr and third parties might show up slightly after release).- will Hotpatching on WS 2025 be free when the VM is running on Azure Stack HCI? There are customers that may not adopt WS 2022 Azure Edition as their software vendors "do not support it" albeit it isn't an all-different OS, rather SKU imho. Yeah, contracts and semantics. It would be great to see Hotpatch no WS 2025 as an additional Azure Hybrid benefit, would align with the current terms and ideas.
- Kei-kiCopper ContributorI am looking forward to the announcement of Windows Server vNext. Thank you for the opportunity to clarify something that I've been curious about. Here are my questions. - I believe that Hotpatching is one of the key features. Are there any other standout features? Could you tell me about the sales message for Windows Server vNext like the Secured-core Servers in Windows Server 2022? - My understanding is that Hotpatching requires Azure Arc. Are there any other new features that cannot be used without Azure Arc?

Definitely check out the Ignite session, but there are major changes across the board: Hotpatching Everywhere Active Directory Hyper-V/AI/GPUs Storage Networking Containers Security ...and the list goes on and on... Check out the Ignite session! - Elden_Christensen

I recommend watching this presentation that Jeff and I did at Ignite, we do a rundown of the new features coming in the next release of Windows Server. https://ignite.microsoft.com/en-US/sessions/f3901190-1154-45e3-9726-d2498c26c2c9?source=sessions We are happy here in this AMA to speak to any questions you have on any of them :-) Thanks! Elden- Kei-kiCopper ContributorThank you for your answer. How about second question? My understanding is that Hotpatching requires Azure Arc. Are there any other new features that cannot be used without Azure Arc?
