Access Issues with Windows 11 24H2
I am starting to experience issues with using Access (Microsoft® Access® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2501 Build 16.0.18429.20132) 64-bit), that I have never encountered before. My windows version is Windows 11 24H2.
I created a brand new database (to see if my problems occurred on a brand new database and not my existing databases) with two tables, each with 3 records - so a very useful database to have, but anyway... I tried to create a query to join the two tables and saw that:
- Large areas of the query editor was unavailable for me to drop a table onto - a red circle with a line through it came up
- Once I dropped the table to an acceptable area (middle of screen), I couldn't create the join by dragging from field to field. I could only create the join by going into SQL mode and writing the join myself
- I couldn't drag a column to the selection pane to the position i want. I had to double click to put at end of select, then physically move the field to position i wanted.
This is definitely not how it should work I have worked with access on and off for 30 years, and haven't come across this.
I had totally uninstalled office 365 and reinstalled from the microsoft website.
I came across this on reddit but nothing else.
Does anyone have any idea on what could be causing this?
Many thanks
Les
Hi,
The problem should be fixed by the update KB5052093. We have updated the AFo article.
You can also find details in my reply from today in this Answers thread.
BTW Funny: I couldn't post the link to the Microsoft KB article because I got this message, stating that parts of the link are not permitted:

I am upgraded to KB5052093, and everything working well. I will mark this as the solution. Thanks for all your assistance.

Thanks for the update Karl. My desktop is waiting for this to install - I will do tonight. I haven't been using access on my monitors since I raised this, so I thought I'd try again before installing the update.
Access seems to be working ok now on my external monitors. Drag and drop is working fine. 🤔
There have been a number (x11) of Security Updates for Microsoft Office 2016 32-Bit Edition installed on 25.02.2025, which is weird as I have never had this installed, on any of my devices. Possibly an automatic update??? But these relate to prior year.
I'll download\install KB5052093, tonight and let you know it is still working 😃.

My computer just required a lengthy windows update when I logged on first thing today and I am now experiencing the same issue of not being able to create a join using the visual query builder.

This information looks like taken from the About Access dialog. Please do NOT take the build number from there as it is not always updated.
Instead we need the build number that you see directly in the File - Account dialog. This may be the same 18429.20132 or the newer 18429.20158, which could make a difference regarding the affected build or even the causing update.
In either case, it would be interesting if you could go back 1 build using the easy command line method explained in this article and see if the problem is still there or goes away.
Another test would be if the problem goes away when you change the external monitor from "Extended" to "Duplicate".

Hi Karl
You are quite right, my version was from the About Access dialog box - I can't say what my version is on the File - Account dialog as I downgraded to an earlier version on Saturday.
I went back a version on Saturday using the ODT method. I am now showing Build 18429.20158 in the File - Account dialog box. However the issue is still occurring. I did also put new cables to my monitors - this didn't solve the issue.
I changed my display setting to duplicate, and the problem no longer occurs. It appears to work normally.
Thanks
Les

I am on the next version of Access after the one referenced above, Version 2501 Build 18429.20158. I am running Windows 11 24H2, OS build 26100.3194. I cannot replicate this bug: building queries in the query editor works as it always has. I can drag tables into the query and join fields by dragging from field to field. I have the Monaco SQL Editor not enabled (unchecked the box in Options).
Maybe it's fixed in my version of Access. But this may be important: I am running Windows as a virtual machine under Parallels on a MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon (M3 Max chip), so my Windows is built for Arm64, not Intel x64. I have the latest updates to both macOS, 15.3.1, and Parallels, 20.2.1 (55876).

One thing I should add: I am running Windows in a Parallels window on an external monitor.

If possible, can you also provide a sample accdb which replicates the problem?
- les_lockettCopper Contributor
I would if I could work out how to attach a file. The attachment icon doesn't do anything for me. Possibly I don't have rights yet as just joined?? Or no storage space... The db is only 620kb, so tiny, and it works fine on my laptop screen, just not the monitors.
As this seems to be restricted to the monitor, I will check all my cables etc this weekend to see if anything is amiss that could be contributing to this.

During the last month this is also happening to me using MS Access 2019.
I have restricted usability on my secondary monitor whist using the query builder trying to use the Table Join UI within the query builder. Also created a new DB with 2 x tables simple structure and replicates the same issues
Have also uninstalled and reinstalled Office, which made no difference.

Can you share a screenshot showing the red circle with the line through it which you describe?
We are also assuming that your tables do have Referential Integrity enforced on the relationships between them. Can you confirm that, please?
- les_lockettCopper Contributor
Yes I do have referential integrity enforced normally. In this example, I don't, there is no need.
Hi,
You don't write which SQL editor you are using, the old or the new one. However, since the latest bigger changes regarding queries have all been related to the new Monaco SQL editor, you could try if it changes anything when you disable the new editor by unticking File - Options - Current Database - Enable Monaco SQL Editor.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of the Monaco SQL Editor (live and learn)- it is ticked. I have unticked, closed and retried. Still the same issue
I have just noted that this issue only seems to manifest itself when i have access open on an external monitor. It does not occur when I open on my laptop screen.

First, a big thank you, Les, for all of the detail you provided in pinning down the bug and for the video demonstrating it. It will make a big difference.
Here's a link to the AccessForever.org article where we'll add information on developments.
