File explorer "see more" tab always opens upwards 24H2
Hi all! I'm on 24H2 with Insider RP build 1882. When I go into File Explorer and click on the 3 dots in the address bar for "see more" the tab always opens upwards. Hence if the window is at the top of the screen, the options are not visible. I have to drag the screen down in order to see them and when I do drag, there's a black bar appears at the top of the screen. Happens on all 3 of my PCs. The view button opens correctly.
Anyone else seeing this?

Microsoft is finally rolling out an official experimental fix to some users with Build 26120.3380.
The fix is not propagated to all the other 24H2 builds and Canary yet.
Hopefully they will make up their mind. This issue has been around for over 4 months. π€£π€£π€£π€£π€·ββοΈ
At least it finally works without adding the extra bug on closing File Explorer. Will see how long it will take to get the same fix on all the affected builds. ππ€¬π€·ββοΈ

On Feb 14, 2025, the MS blog for Build 26120.3281 says that the problem is fixed. That is not quite true, it appeared to be fixed on one machine but not another with the same exact Build number.
- Fixed an issue causing the see more ββ¦β menu in the command bar to open in the wrong direction for some resolutions.
After some further testing, I figured out the difference for Build 26120.3281.
The different behavior is caused by one of those experimental features that was enabled on a Beta machine and not on another in Dev channel with the same exact Build.
Feature id [54792954] (Labels on file explorer context menu) is the cause of the difference.
That feature is the one that added the labels under the icons in the context menu of 23H2, which is not needed in 24H2, because those labels are already added without that experimental feature.
With this build 26120.3281, it seems to fix the 3 dots menu problem too but adds the second problem for the F.E. not closing just with a click on the red. X. π€£π€£
Not a good choice, if I enable id:54792954 I have one bug (F.E. closing bug), if I disable it, I get the other bug (3 dots menu opening upwards).
Come on MS fix this mess properly!

Ensure you're running the latest version of Windows 24H2 and the Insider RP build. You can do this by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

"The 'See More' menu (three dots in File Explorer address bar) always opens upwards in build 1882, causing it to be partially or completely off-screen when the File Explorer window is at the top of the screen."
- fggIBSteel Contributor
See my previous replies, disable id:51960011 to get rid of the problem, Microsoft has been ignoring this bug that they added months ago. The problem happens with various display Scale setting.

It looks like a UI bug in Windows 24H2 Insider RP build 1882. The "See more" menu opening upwards and becoming inaccessible when the window is at the top suggests a positioning issue. The black bar appearing when dragging could be a rendering glitch. Since it's happening on all your PCs, it's likely a system-wide bug. You might want to report it via the Feedback Hub and check for updates or fixes in future builds. Meanwhile, as a workaround, try resizing or repositioning the window before clicking the menu.
- fggIBSteel Contributor
That bug has been reported for months in the Feedback Hub and Microsoft didn't do anything to fix it yet.
The bug was introduced by a useless experimental fix. [51960011] (FileExplorerTabLineFix).
Disabling that failing fix, eliminates the problem. Microsoft is just ignoring the FBH reports. ππ€¬

3 dots in the address bar for "see more" the tab always opens upwards, still happening for me machine for new version upgraded to 24H2 OS build 26100.2894 latest.

There is no official fix yet.
You can work around the bug by disabling the feature id:51960011.

Since you're using an Insider build, ensure that you're running the latest version, as Microsoft often releases fixes and updates that can resolve such issues. Check for updates by going to Settings > Windows Update and see if there are any pending updates.

The problem is not just on insider builds it is also on current 24H2 public build 26100.2894.
Microsoft has not released a valid fix for this problem yet. The bug was added when they enabled, by default, on all 24H2 builds an experimental fix for a completely different issue.
Not only that fix did not work, instead it added this extra bug on file explorer opening the 3 dots menu in the wrong direction.
An easy workaround is by disabling the bad useless fix which added this bug.
The culprit is the feature id below that is causing this bug:
[51960011] (FileExplorerTabLineFix)
If you disable it, the bug will go away. ππ€·ββοΈ
The problem has been reported months ago, Microsoft tried to fix it, but the released fix only worked partially for some specific Display Scale setting.
Still fails with Display Scale of 125%, 150%, 175% etc.
It may work with Scale of 100%, 200%, 300%.
Disabling the feature id:51960011 eliminates the problem completely with any display settings. ππ
You can see here that it was enabled in the ImageDefault of all 24H2 Builds and also latest Canary Build 27774.1000. That is how MS added this annoying bug. π€¬
The workaround is showing up on several non-MS web sites and even MS Copilot will point to that unofficial workaround to eliminate the problem while waiting for an official good working fix. ππππ€·ββοΈ

It sounds like you're encountering a frustrating issue with the "See more" options in File Explorer, specifically with how the menu opens upward instead of downwards. This can definitely be annoying, especially when it obscures the options you want to see.

There is an easy way to fix the bug, by disabling that useless feature ID 51960011 that MS enabled by default on all 24H2 builds. It was reported several times to Microsoft, but they just seem to ignore the FBH reports. π€·ββοΈ
The problem happens when the Display Scale settings is 125%, 150%, 175% etc.
Does not fail with Scale of 100%, 200%, 300%.

hello how do i disabe this please, thankyou
- fggIBSteel Contributor
That bug has been reported months ago, but Microsoft guys are ignoring it.
They tried a fix that only works with specific display settings, but still fails when the Display Scale is 125%, 150%, 175%, etc.
The bug was added when they enabled another experimental fix for a completely different issue.
The experimental fix did not work at all and instead it added this silly bug with the 3 dots menu opening upwards.
This below is the culprit id they enabled in the image default of every 24H2 Build and also on Canary.
[51960011] (FileExplorerTabLineFix)
Disabling the id above gets rid of the problem, but the guys at Microsoft are not listening to the FBH reports. π€¬
What does it take to wake them up?

I was having this problem with 2x displays that are both on 125% scale but, was not having the issue with my other 2x displays with 200% scale. So, I tried this suggested fix and disabled feature 51960011 and after a reboot, the issue is resolved.
Microsoft should fix this bug but a better idea, just put the dang features back in the toolbar. Why do these options I use often have to be in a hidden menu and more clicks away? It's so stupid to dumb-down the UI so much and not let me pick was gets hidden behind ... anyway. π€¬
- fggIBSteel Contributor
It was reported to MS months ago that the bug was caused by that completely useless 51960011.
They are still ignoring the facts and keep enabling that feature id by default on every 24H2 build and also on Canary.
They tried yet another different fix recently (on Feb 14, 2025) by enabling another feature 54792954 which was originally meant for a completely different purpose in 23H2. π΅βπ«π
That feature id actually fixes your case with 125% scale, but unfortunately it adds a new different bug on closing File Explorer.
Typical MS geniuses! Fix one bug by adding another new one. π€£π€£π€£π€¬π€¬π€¬

Hello,
it seems to be a usability bug in the Windows Insider Preview build 1862 (24H2). I can give some suggestions at this point.
Resize the Window:
- As you've noted, dragging the File Explorer window down temporarily fixes the issue, but this is inconvenient.
- If the menu consistently opens upward, keeping the window positioned away from the top edge of the screen might be the only current workaround.
Check for Updates:
- This issue might already be identified and fixed in a newer build. Ensure you have the latest updates for the Windows Insider Preview:
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Restart Explorer:
Sometimes, restarting the File Explorer process can resolve temporary UI glitches:
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
- Find and restart the Windows Explorer process.
Use Keyboard Shortcuts:
Δ±f the menu is inaccessible:
- Press Alt to focus the File Explorer menu.
- Use arrow keys to navigate to the desired option.
